Public Hearing for Discipline Rules
November 7, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is proposing changes to Chapter 392-400 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). This chapter provides rules for how a public school district may administer student discipline, including notice for parents and due process protections for students who are suspended or expelled.
The OSPI rules attempt to 1) limit suspension/expulsion; 2) establish clear procedures for disciplinary action; 3) provide students educational services while suspended/expelled; and 4) strengthen student re-engagement when returning to school from suspension/expulsion. OSPI encourages comments on the proposed rules, and will hold a series of public hearings to receive feedback.
This a great chance for students, parents, teachers, and education advocates to determine if these rules and OSPI will eliminate the school to prison pipeline that sends students of color to jail instead of college.
If you can’t attend the public hearing but still want to submit a comment: email or mail Dierk Meierbachtol, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200, at DisciplineRuleComments@k12.wa.us.
