The staff and Board of Directors of the Equity in Education Center are saddened to learn of the passing of Frank Chopp, former and longest-serving Speaker of the House for the Washington State legislature and champion for equity, affordable housing, and public services.
Frank’s legacy is one of steadfast leadership and deep commitment to working-class Washingtonians, particularly communities that have historically been left out of policy decisions. Throughout his career, he remained focused on expanding access to education, housing, and healthcare. He worked to ensure state resources served the people who needed them most.
As Speaker, Frank helped guide critical investments in public education and community-based services, and his collaborative approach made space for advocates, grassroots organizers, and those directly impacted by inequities.
The Equity in Education Center honors Frank’s memory by continuing the work he believed in—building systems rooted in justice, opportunity, and community voice.
“It’s not about power; it’s about what you do with it.”
This captures Chopp’s lifelong focus on using his leadership to uplift communities, expand opportunities, and create lasting change for those in need.
We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those in Washington who were touched by his leadership.
