The backs of young students as they walk towards a building

Public education should be a powerful tool for justice, equity, and opportunity, not a system reinforcing existing disparities.

Washington’s education system was not designed with historically marginalized students in mind. Students of color, low-income students, students with disabilities, English language learners, and rural students face systemic barriers that wealthier, white, and urban students do not. A “one-size-fits-all” approach ignores these disparities, reinforcing educational inequities.

While all students should benefit from systemic improvements, the solutions that drive those improvements must be intentionally designed to remove the barriers faced by the students who are furthest from opportunity.
