Why Washington needs funding reform
Education is Washington State’s constitutional paramount duty, but our funding system continues to fail the students who need the most support.
Despite progress following the McCleary decision, our schools are still funded through outdated and inequitable formulas that:
- Shortchange students of color, low-income students, and rural communities
- Underfund special education, bilingual programs, and English learners
- Rely too heavily on local property taxes, deepening disparities
- Focus on adult salaries over student needs
The result? A systemically racist, ableist, and classist educational system that marginalizes our youth, particularly BIPOC, low-income, and special needs students.
